Maths Curriculum
At Dobcroft Junior School, we aim to provide children with an exciting range of opportunities to allow them to explore and engage with the National Curriculum – the statutory guidance that lays out what the children should learn in their time at our school.
Maths and English are often the focus of the mornings.
Following the changes to the National Curriculum, delivery of lessons have now adopted a mastery approach where children will progress through fluency problems before moving on to problem solving and reasoning type questions. This is done in a fun, engaging way using the outdoor spaces around school or linking maths to real-life problems. Lessons often focus on using concentrate apparatus such as Numicon to help, before moving onto pictorial representations of a problem and then finally seeing the problem in a more abstract way. Details of this approach can be clearly seen in our calculations policy.
Assessment of maths is done in a variety of ways: pre-learning tasks, peer marking, teaching assistant and teacher marking, as well as more formal assessments each half-term, help us as teachers identify your child’s next step.
Children are encouraged to do some home learning such as learn their times tables and reading the time on both analogue and digital clocks. We also encourage children to practise skills and strategies they’ve learnt in school at home and we encourage you to take advantage of the subscription to MyMaths and Education City websites. To gain access to MyMaths and Education City please contact your child's class teacher for login details.
Each year group will also regularly provide homework: either a written or practical task.
