Date: 19th Jan 2021 @ 2:44pm

English Week 4

Monday 25th January

LO - To respond to a story.

  • Read the opening section of Eric.
  • List 3 important things that we learn about the narrator, Mum and Eric (highlight the evidence from the text to back up your opinion).
  • Read When Did I Feel Like and Outsider? Do any of these situations seem familiar to you? Are there any other times when you have felt like an outsider?
  • Listen to the whole of the story of Eric and look carefully at the illustrations. Use the PowerPoint Eric or watch Ruth Merttens reading the book https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H71F0-_QrpE .
  • Read Story Talk Questions and answer them in clear sentences.

Tuesday 26th January

LO - To revise pronouns and determiners.

Pronouns and determiners are great for aiding with cohesion and avoiding repetition. You will then practise using pronouns and determiners and write about a day out for Eric.

Wednesday 27th January

LO - To plan and write a letter.

  • Read Ending and then read Ending Questions. Think about your answers and then write them as clear sentences
  • Use Letter Planner to plan a letter to send to Eric (imagine you are the narrator of the story). • Write your letter carefully.
  • Practise reading the story out loud. Decide the pace that you will read and the expression that you will use. Find the text for the story here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/gallery/2009/may/13/shaun-tan-eric-story-pictures
  • When you are ready, read the story to somebody else or make a recording of yourself and send it someone.

Thursday 28th January

LO - To recap expanding noun phrases

  • Read Jack and the Beanstalk. Read it in your head and then read it out loud. Can you find the rhythm of the poem?
  • Follow the words as you watch this video of the poem. What do you think are the good points of this performance? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLcU650GcjY
  • Use the PowerPoint on noun phrases and this video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFJP1FNUEVY&t to remind you about expanded noun phrases.
  • Complete the Expanded Noun Phrases activity. Rewrite each sentence, expanding the noun phrase so that it has more information.

Friday 29th January

LO -  To write a story based on the poem

  • Read Jack and the Beanstalk again and summarise it into 6 main events (use the planner if that is helpful)
  • Look back to the sentences with expanded noun phrases that you wrote yesterday and choose at least 4 to add into your story.
  •  Rewrite the poem as a story. Try to include as much humour as you can. Use the success criteria to ensure you include plenty of Year 6 learning.
