Monday 6th July

Aim: Read newspaper articles about Black Lives Matter. Watch a Blue Peter Clip and create interview questions for the presenters.

Have you watched the news recently or heard about the Black Lives Matter protests? Today you will read newspaper articles about these. You will then answer questions. Afterwards, watch the Blue Peter clip about racism and create interview questions for the presenters.     

Tuesday 7th July

Aim: Read a poem, ‘Hollow’, about the toppling of the statue. Answer reflective questions. Read a story on similar theme – read and plan.  

Do you know who Edward Colston is and where his statue was? Today you will find out all about him and watch a poem about the removal of his statue and answer questions. You will then read a fairy-story with a similar theme and plan your own story.

Wednesday 8th July

Aim: Read a poem by Martin Niemöller, ‘And then they came for me.’ Read and summarise a non-fiction article. Evaluate some fiction.    

 Read the Martin Niemöller poem: ‘And then they came for me.’  Can you read an introduction to Black Lives Matters and summarise the content?  Watch the reading of a children’s book about Black Lives Matters and evaluate the book.

Thursday 9th July

Aim: Read first-hand accounts of children’s experiences of racism. Present a story. Read a non-fiction article.  

 Today you will read and summarise two accounts of experiences of racism. For the third experience you will watch a video and present its story in words and pictures. Then read about challenging racism.  

Friday 10th July

Aim: Read the author profile of, and interview with Benjamin Zephaniah. Read poems. Watch a performance and practise reading a poem out loud.   

Today you will read about Benjamin Zephaniah. You will read three of his poems and choose your favourite. You will then watch a performance and practise reading a poem out loud.
