Y5 English Week Beginning 01.02.21

This week our English will focus on the video stimulus called ‘Wing.’

Please follow the link below so that you can access the video. You can watch the video as many times as you like throughout the week.

Please be aware that for English this week we have uploaded 1 PDF document that will include all of the worksheets.  

Underneath, we have done a day by day summary as to which task we would like the children to complete. This summary will indicate which page of the PDF document the children’s task is on.

Please do not complete more than this task as the children will be doing the same work at home as they are in school and it good for us to be consistent in both school and remote learning.

Monday 01.02.21 – pages 1 and 2 of the PDF document

LO: To create a storyboard of important events

  1. Watch the video ‘Wing’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIyN606PF3U
  2. Create a storyboard of the important events in the video. There are only 8 boxes so choose wisely.
  3. Draw a picture of the important event and a description

Support task- Use page 2, this has the events already picked out for you. You just have to describe what is happening at that important event.

Deepening challenge- In your descriptions, include expanded noun phrases to describe the characters/setting.

 

Tuesday 02.02. 21 – pages 3 and 4 of the PDF document

LO: To ‘show not tell’ the main character’s feelings

  1. Put yourself in the main character’s shoes. Use the word ‘I’ to help you.
  2. During each event, explain how you were feeling using ‘show not tell’

Example: Terrified- I closed my eyes as I did not want to see what was going to happen next.

Example: determined- I grabbed my tools and set off making my extra wing

Example: Thankful – Dropping to my knees, I stared at her in admiration

Support task- Use page 4, and choose which description would fit how/what the main character is feeling by circling it.
Deepening task- Do not start each description with I. Vary your openers.

 

Wednesday 03.02. 21 – Pages 5 and 6 of the PDF document

LO: To analyse a diary entry

  1. Open up the PowerPoint named: 03.02.21- Wednesday Diary PowerPoint (also available as a PDF if you  don't have PowerPoint) and read it through.
  2. Complete page 5 of the document by reading the diary entry and finding the features.
  3. Use colouring crayons to underline the different features of the diary.

Support task- Use page 6. The features have already been found for you. You just have to decide which colour links to which feature.   

Deepening task- Try to find all of the examples of each feature. 

 

Thursday 04.02. 21 – Page 7 of the PDF document

LO: To independently write a diary entry                                       

1) You are the main character in the video ‘Wing’
2) You are going to write a diary entry about what has recently happened
3) Use the success criteria to help you to write your diary entry
4) Use your work from earlier this week to help you
5) When you finish, underline where you have included the features.

 Support task -  Use the sentence starters below

Deepening challenge- Use all the features in the success criteria

 

Friday 05.02. 21 –

Task 1) LO: To practise my joined handwriting (25 minutes) Page 8 of the PDF document

  1. Trace the words and then copy them out
  2. Write a paragraph using as many of the words as possible- joining your handwriting as best you can!

 

Task 2) L.O: To infer knowledge from a diary entry (30 minutes) Page 9 of the PDF document

  1. Read the diary entry on page 9- it links with the video we have been working on this week.
  2. Answer the questions about the diary entry
