Year 5 Wider Curriculum Week Beginning 1st June: French Week

Bonjour!

This week we are going to be using a really catchy French nursery rhyme as the basis for our Wider Curriculum home learning. Listening to songs in a different language is a great way to hone your listening skills, practise your pronunciation and to have fun! We will also get to revisit the year 4 topics of colours and body parts.

I recommend watching the song a couple of times and then watching the powerpoint where I talk through the pronunciation.  This can be revisted as many times as possible throughout the week. One of our aims is for the children to be able to sing along with the song and create actions for each line!  All years will be using the same song so siblings in different years can perform together if they wish! Year 5 and 6 will then go on to create new versions of the song. 

Monday

Watch the video of the song and then watch and listen to the powerpoint.  

Complete the match-up lyrics exercise. Try to write out the lyrics and their meaning to practise writing the French. Watch what the robot does in the video to help you work out the lyrics!

Tuesday

One of the reasons this song was chosen was because it features several letter chains or graphemes that have different sounds or phonemes in French and English. Take ch for example. Usually in English it is ch as in church whereas in French it is sh as in Michelle. Or oi which is oy as in toilet in English but wa as in croissant in French. 

Complete the mindmap of French words that contain the graphemes seen in the song. Think of all the French words that you have seen so far in school (food, numbers, animals, colours, sports, opinions)

Wednesday 

Watch the video of the song again to remind you of the lyrics.

Complete the crossword of the lyrics of the song. When you have finished practise saying and then singing the song aloud. Can you do it off by heart? Can you create actions to the song?

Thursday

One of the reasons the song works so well is that it uses simple rhymes. Look at the alternative verses powerpoint and listen to my pronunciation for each. Then complete the sheet first saying what the French sentences mean and then work out the French for the English sentences. Try to say all of the French sentences aloud. 

Friday

You are going to create a comic strip for an alternative version of the song. When you finish your comic strip try to sing it aloud in time with the music. Use the WAGOLL comic strip for inspiration.
