Year 5 – Home Learning

Friday 22nd May

Hi guys, I hope you're all doing well. I've had a lovely couple of days with the key worker children in school and also speaking with my class using Google Hangout - it was so nice to catch up with you all and play some games (plus seeing all of your baking skills was fab though did make me very jealous!). I hope Y5CF and Y5WH have enjoyed talking with their teachers and classmates too.

It's the last day of this half term, can you believe it?! So here is your last bit of work to do and I have attached a list of things you might like to try in your holiday if you are at a loose end! You may have already done a lot of them but see if there's anything else you could try your hand at. Try and make the most of this gorgeous weather!

Speak to you all soon,

Miss Wilson x

Maths

Today’s Maths is a mental arithmetic paper to keep your brain ticking over and those mental skills sharp. Remember to show your calculation and to prove it using the inverse where possible! You should be aiming to beat your score from last time!

English

LO: To write a narrative including a flashback

Today is writing day! Remember that this is a short story – no more than a page and a half! Really focus on your structure but mainly your use of language – get that show not tell and similes in there. The three main points you should be including for each paragraph are: describing the setting (using your senses); how does the character feel (using emotive language and powerful verbs); and what action is going on around you (using powerful verbs).

Write in the first person as the man playing the piano. Please send your stories to your class teachers – they would love to read them and to hear from you.

Support – Try and tick 5 things off your success criteria. Use the vocabulary banks attached to help you.

Challenge – Try to include as many of the greater depth features from the success criteria as well as ticking the main ones off.

SPaG - Optional

LO: To use a dictionary

Today’s SPaG activity is to practise our dictionary skills. Dictionaries are very useful to check spellings and also that we are using an appropriate word. They also tell us modified versions of the word and its word class!

Here you have some dictionary challenges to complete if you have a dictionary at home.

Support – Select 8 of the tasks to complete

Challenge – Set yourself a time challenge. How long are you going to give yourself to complete the challenge? Try and beat it!

Alternative LO: To create a dictionary

If you do not have a dictionary at home, here is an alternative task.

Go through a book of your choice (a non-fiction one would be great!), select between 8 and 15 technical words and create your own dictionary for those words. Remember dictionaries go in alphabetical order, name the word class and give a definition.

https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/ is a great website for child friendly definitions.

Spelling List - 28 - Homophones

This week's spellings are all homophones (words that sound the same with different meanings). There is an activity attached so you can practise them.

Wider Curriculum

RE – LO: To develop an understanding of Sikh's commitment to God

Open up the document called RE Places-of-Worship-Sikh-Gurdwaras.ppt    Today you’re going to learn all about where Sikh’s worship.  Gurdwara means ‘the gateway to Guru’.  Half way through there is a little clip to watch on BBC Bitesize.

Once you’ve finished it might be helpful to talk through with someone at home all the things you have found out.    Jot these points onto post-it notes or scrap bits of paper and begin to organise them into groups.  Once you’re happy with the way you’ve organised your thinking, begin to create a mind map.  Add little images and symbols to help.  If you find mind maps challenging then print off the task sheet, cut out the images and descriptions and match them.  Once you’re happy check using the answers then stick onto a piece of paper.

PE – Keep up with the Network Games – there’s only 2 days left!
