Y6 Maths Week Beginning 15th June

Date: 12th Jun 2020 @ 2:55pm

Hi Year 6, Miss Farrah here again. You will be starting a new unit this week – Statistics. You'll be learning about the properties of circles; reading, interpreting and drawing line graphs; reading, interpreting and drawing pie charts and calculating the mean average.

Before we can do that, there is a mental arithmetic test and an assessment to see how much you have learned about the properties of shapes over the last 2 weeks.

All resources are attached to the blog post. Parents - we have included answers too.

Monday 15th June

  1. We are going to kick start the week with a mental maths activity. There are 2 versions of the mental test, a full booklet and a paper saving version. It is always a good idea to show some of your method, so if you use the paper saving version, jot your calculations on a piece of paper.
  2. Once you have completed the mental maths activity, ask your adult to check the answers for you. Try to go back and see where you went wrong; could you get it right if you tried it again?
  3. Why not have a go at defeating the dragons in the Arithmagic game? The pin code is IV6123

Search Twinkl go on the internet and then follow the link that says you have a pin code from your teacher or click on the link. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go/sign-in

Tuesday 16th June

  1. Your task for today is to complete the end of unit assessment on properties of shapes. There isn’t a time limit but it needs to be done independently if possible.
  2. If you do not have a protractor at home, you should miss out the measuring questions; numbers 2 and 10.
  3. When you have finished, ask an adult to check it for you.

Wednesday 17th June

L.O: to solve problems involving the properties of circles

  1. You need the activity 1 sheet at the beginning. Activity 1 is differentiated. You only need to know the names of the properties on the * sheet but if you would like to investigate the other parts of a circle, you could use the ** or the ***. But do this extension after you have completed the problems in activity 2.
  2. Click on the link to watch a video about the properties of a circle. Right at the beginning of the video, he tells you the three main parts of a circle that you need to know. Fill in the names of the parts on your sheet, this will help you when you begin to do some problem solving. Try the questions as you are led through, pausing when you need to.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ni53wpVO2I
  3. Now you know the parts of a circle, work through some problems on the lesson PowerPoint before you have a go on your own.  You may even find one of your questions on there.
  4. Complete activity 2 or 2a if you need something a little easier. Then ask an adult to check your answers.
  5. If you have chosen do the ** or *** sheet for activity 1, go back and do the research to complete your sheet, or you could have a go at the extra challenge activity.

Thursday 11th June

L.O: to read and interpret line graphs.

  1. Print off the Knowledge organiser as it will help with the work you will be doing on statistics over the next week.
  2. Open the lesson PowerPoint and work your way through the slides.
  3. Choose which sheet you would like to complete, depending on how confident you feel.
  4. When you have finished, ask an adult to check it for you.
  5. If you would like to try a little more, try the extra challenge.

Friday 12th June

L.O: to draw a line graph with accuracy

  1. Work your way through the lesson PowerPoint, it will walk you through the stages of creating a line graph.
