Y5 Maths Week beginning 6 July

Date: 3rd Jul 2020 @ 11:58am

Hi everyone - I can't believe this is the penultimate maths blog! I am so proud of you all for how you have dealt with lockdown. I miss your smilng faces a lot! I can't wait to see them when we come back to school.

Right - this week...

Monday

L.O: To estimate capacity

This is a great lesson to do outside! You will need a variety of containers, water and a measuring jug (or a way of accurately measuring capacity) Remember that capacity is how much liquid something can hold

Task 1 – Find three different containers. Estimate how much water they would hold (their capacity) and then check using your measuring jug. After completing the first container you might have a more accurate idea about how much the others can hold. Put the containers in order of capacity.

Task 2 – Use one larger container and one smaller. Approximately how many times could you fit the capacity of the smaller container into the larger one? (How many times can you pour it in?) Work out the capacity of the smaller container. What is the approximate capacity of the larger container?

Task 3- Can you find 2 different shaped containers that have a similar capacity?

Task 4- Practise reading scales using this worksheet. A lot of you should be trying ***. The two star and one star option are really useful if you ‘re struggling to remember how to do it!

Wednesday

End of unit assessment

As always – give this a go today. If you make any mistakes or find a particular area tricky, try to use the answers to help you  work out what you’re finding difficult.

As an extra brain work out – have a look at this problem solving video clip –can you work out how it happens? https://nrich.maths.org/13664

Thursday

Problem solving

I’ve given you 6 capacity word problems to work through. Remember our Stepping Stones to Success… Read it, Filter it, Prep it,  solve it, show it, prove it. I’ve put the answers at the bottom. I haven’t used formal written methods as I was typing. Please make sure you do!

There is then a logic puzzle, again, using capacity

Friday Guess what….Mental Arithmetic Test

I bet you’re getting good at these! Remember Miss Field’s advice – show your working out!
