Y5 English WB 22nd June

Date: 15th Jun 2020 @ 11:32am

Hi Year 5,

We hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend! This week’s English work continues with the ‘lockdown’ theme which you started last week.  You will spend the week reflecting on how life has changed since the Covid 19 virus arrived. What are the negatives to the current situation? Are there any positives? Do you think the world will think differently after all of this? Lots to think about and discuss.

Monday 22nd June

Aim: Reading a poem written in the lockdown. Revising adverbs of possibility and using these to write about their own lives.

You will begin the week by reading a poem (you can also watch the performance) about a wedding which has changed as a result of lockdown. You will revise adverbs of possibility using the PowerPoint and video to help. Can you write about your own life using adverbs of possibility?

Tuesday 23rd June

Aim: Reading and summarising newspaper articles about the amazing things some people have done in the lockdown.

Have you heard any inspirational stories recently? Did you hear about the fundraising by Captain Tom Moore? Today you will read a newspaper article with an inspirational story and answer questions.  After, you will read other lockdown inspirational stories and summarise them.

Wednesday 24th June

Aim:  Writing about an artwork by Banksy created in response to the Covid situation.  Revising, identifying and using relative clauses.

Have you spotted any street art which relates to our current situation? Today you will look at some recent pieces of street art which have hidden messages about COVID 19.  Look at the Banksy picture carefully and then answer the questions.

Then look at other pieces of street art and write sentences about them. Can you include a relative clause? You learnt about relative clauses a couple of weeks ago, but in case you have forgotten we have attached a PowerPoint and video to help.

Parents: If your child struggles with relative clauses, there are other activities on this webpage which may help.

Thursday 25th June

Aim: Writing, stimulated by images. Reading a poem inspired by the lockdown. Answering questions.

Look carefully at the images in the resources. Can you think how they are connected? It’s tricky! After you have thought about them, see how they are used in the poem, ‘The Great Realisation’.  Can you answer the reflective questions?

Friday 26th June

Aim: Analysing the poem. Reflecting on future hopes. Writing persuasively.

Re-read ‘The Great Realisation’. What are your own hopes for the future of the world? Can you plan and write a persuasive letter about these to their MP?
